Q:
I have a PMR 446 Motorola T5422
Walkie Talkie> What is Vox? How does it work? |
A:
VOX Operation of Walkie Talkies and Motorola Talkabouts
VOX is a facility on the road whereby the microphone triggers the radio to
start transmitting. This occurs when the output of the mic reaches a certain
threshold.
Most radios have an adjustable threshold set by the sensitivity level in the
menus. The sensitivity needs to be adjusted according to your own voice level
and also relative to background noise.
(As throat mics do not pick up background noise is irrelevant to this style
of mic)!
MOTOROLA TALKABOUT VOX
The T series Motorolas have generally three settings, 1, 2, & 3 – 3
being the most sensitive.
Motorola Talkabouts are made under licence by 1 factory in Hong Kong and are
supposed to be compatible between headset accessories, however it as been found
the output or "bias voltage" setting at which the mic operates varies between
models. Many UK and US models are set differently but even this is only a general
rule.
The Iasus headsets are set to super sensitive and the radio should be set
to its most sensitive = "3".
FOR VOX Operation:
The headset should first be connected to the radio and the Radio then switched
on!
Iasus do this test. Count 1,2 3, ...9,10. At normal speed and normal level,
too slow and the radio will drop out of Tx
The radio should start to transmit at around 1 or 2. It should carry on transmitting
for a 1" or so after counting 10!
If it drops out of Tx early it may be set internally to a low Open Voltage.
If it jumps in and out of Tx you need to adjust the sensitivity setting on
the radio or increase your voice level. |
