Each earshell, which is an ear defender, has it's own built-in microphone. The microphones pick up ambient sound, such as a conversation with another person and relays it through the speakers inside the ear shell enclosed under the foam ear cushions.
An on/off volume pot controls the level of each speaker.
When a gun is fired (a BANG!) a fast acting noise gate shuts the circuitry down blocking any loud impulse sounds from outside in 100ths of a second from the mic to the speakers. WHY ACTIVE HEARING?
If you do not wear your hearing protection all the time whilst shooting the effectiveness of the Noise protection is reduced. At 90% weartime the effectiveness is lost. Pushing your ear defender back to hear someone talk whilst rounds are being fired off is damaging to your ears. With Active listening you have 100% protection whilst you are wearing them.
